Emma and Rob Sturdy were devastated when permission was granted for a major solar project at Eden Farm in North Yorkshire, despite warnings that it could cause “irreversible detriment” to their agricultural business.

While landowners may earn up to £1,200 per acre from solar farms, tenant farmers, who manage and rely on this land, often receive no financial benefit. There is an argument for installing solar on brownfield sites, car parks, and poor-quality land- areas that don’t disrupt food production or damage ecological integrity. We maximise every available surface, including vertical walls, as we did at Aston Hall Farm, where we increased PV capacity from 120 kWp to 250 kWp by using every inch of available space, installing panels on roofs and introducing an innovative side panel system on south-facing barn walls.
  • High performance – South-facing rooftops often outperform ground-mounted systems due to better orientation and fewer obstructions.
  • Low maintenance – Rooftop systems are less prone to damage, easier to access, and more cost-effective over the long term.

With grants available for agricultural solar (ranging from £15,000 to £100,000), rooftop installations offer strong returns and fast payback periods. And unlike land-based schemes, they don’t jeopardise future land use or damage tenant farmers’ businesses.
